What is a postpartum recovery stay — and am I eligible for a refund?

A postpartum recovery stay is a short rest (usually about 3 days, and up to 5 after a cesarean in some funds) in a hotel, recovery institution or vacation apartment in the weeks after birth. Most health funds refund 75%–80% of the cost up to a daily ceiling — but only within the supplementary insurance, and subject to your insurance tier and birth number. The benefit is not from National Insurance and is not part of the basic health basket.

At Shookroon Group we issue a tax invoice in the mother's name that you can submit to your health fund for a refund. The refund amount is set according to the fund's current eligibility terms and your supplementary insurance tier. This guide gathers everything you need — organized by fund, claim window, documents and submission steps.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I book for the recovery stay?
Most funds recognize about 3 nights, so that is the usual booking. The refund is 75%–80% up to a daily ceiling, subject to supplementary insurance. After a cesarean — 5–6 nights in some funds (Clalit Mushlam Gold 5–6, Leumit up to 5 with a possible extension). Eligibility starts from the first birth in the upper tier and from the fourth in the lower tier. Accurate as of June 2026; verify with your fund.
Can I recover in a vacation apartment and still get a refund?
Clalit usually accepts a private vacation apartment or cabin as well, against a proper tax invoice in the mother's name. Maccabi requires a recovery institution or hotel registered with the Ministry of Tourism. In Leumit and Meuhedet the type of accommodation is not explicitly defined in the terms we reviewed — Leumit words it as “a recovery house or hotel of your choice”. Always check your fund's requirements before booking.
What should I arrange at booking so the refund is approved?
At booking, make sure you have active supplementary insurance and that the invoice will be issued as an original tax invoice in the mother's name listing the service recipient — with a separate invoice for the companion if one is coming with you. Afterwards you attach a copy of the ID appendix with the children's names and a hospitalization/birth confirmation. We issue a tax invoice in the mother's name; the refund amount is set by the fund according to its current eligibility terms and your supplementary insurance tier.
How long after the birth can I still take the recovery stay?
In most funds up to about two months from the birth or discharge. In Clalit Platinum, when funded from the pregnancy basket, sometimes up to 6 months. Some funds changed the 2026 claim window — check the current deadline with your fund.
Does my partner staying with me get a refund too?
The refund covers the mother's portion only, not a companion or children. That is why we issue a separate invoice for the companion, so the invoice in the mother's name reflects her portion alone and the refund is calculated correctly. See the FAQ page.
