A port city thousands of years old, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where every alley tells a story. Crusader knights, Ottoman markets, an active fishing port and walls facing the sea. Here's everything worth seeing in Akko, and the most convenient places to stay.
Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and history here is tangible in every corner. These are the sites you can't miss:
Akko is a true culinary destination — hummus that the whole country drives for, fresh fish at the port and Middle Eastern sweets in the market. After the food, the walls facing the sea are perfect for sunset. Akko is also an excellent base for the north: Rosh Hanikra, Nahariya and the Western Galilee are a short drive away — you can combine it with a trip around the north or a day in Haifa.
Old Akko is best experienced when you stay nearby and head out to explore in the morning, before it fills up. That way you also enjoy the market and the port in a relaxed atmosphere.
A vacation apartment in Akko or near the Old City gives you a comfortable base to explore the city and the north. Our Akko accommodation ranges from studios to large apartments, some near the Old City and the port, suited to couples, families and tourists. We'll be glad to recommend a route and the best places to eat.
Old Akko is compact and everything is walkable — here's how to plan a perfect day:
Start at the Knights' Halls and the underground Crusader city, then take the Templars' Tunnel down to the port. An early start means fewer queues and beautiful light for photos.
A fish lunch at the ancient port or famous hummus in the market, then wander the alleys, Khan al-Umdan and the clock tower.
A promenade along the sea walls facing the Mediterranean — one of the finest viewpoints in the city — ending with sunset over the water.
During the Sukkot holiday Akko hosts the Acco Fringe Theatre Festival — one of Israel's oldest cultural events, filling the Old City with performances and street art. A popular time to stay — book ahead.
"Akko is like traveling back in time — the Knights' Halls, the port, the market and the amazing hummus. We were really close and started every morning in the Old City before the crowds. An unforgettable experience for the whole family."
