Sea, mountains, heritage sites, nature reserves and excellent food — the north offers it all over short distances. Whether you've come for a weekend or a long vacation, here are the routes and attractions worth including, and the most convenient place to stay as a base.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites half an hour apart. Haifa with the Bahá'í Gardens, the German Colony, the cable car and the beaches; and old Akko with the Knights' Halls, the port and the market. Combining the two makes for a perfect urban-historical vacation along the northern coastline.
North of Akko the coast continues to Nahariya, Achziv and Rosh Hanikra — the white sea grottoes with the steep cable car and the caves, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the country. Inland, the Western Galilee offers villages, wineries, walking trails and nature reserves. The Carmel ridge above Haifa offers forest trails, the Caves Stream and views over the sea.
The secret to a relaxed vacation in the north is one steady, comfortable base from which you set out in every direction. A vacation apartment in Haifa or Akko places you in the center, with the sea on one side and the Galilee on the other. We have vacation rentals in the north — in Haifa, Akko, Nahariya and the Galilee — for families, for couples and for groups. We'll be glad to help you plan the route.
Not every trip in the north looks the same. Here are a few route ideas based on who you are and what you're in the mood for:
The zoo and science museum in Haifa, the cable car at Rosh Hanikra, and shallow beaches along the northern coast. See Haifa attractions for families.
Sunset from the Bahá'í Gardens, Western Galilee wineries and a quiet meal by the sea in Nahariya or Akko. Ideal for a couples' getaway in the north.
Kziv Stream and Montfort Castle, the Caves Stream reserve on the Carmel, and the Galilee's water trails — green nature and flowing water almost year-round.
Old Akko (a UNESCO site), Haifa's German Colony and the Ghetto Fighters' House — rich history within a short drive.
Hummus in Akko, fish on the Nahariya promenade, wineries and food villages in the Western Galilee, and cafés in the German Colony.
"We made a base in the north and headed out in a different direction every day — Haifa, Akko, Rosh Hanikra and the Galilee. The apartment was spacious and comfortable, a great location for all the trips. Northern Israel is a gem, and this is the right way to enjoy it."
